15th June

I’m having a zero in Lone Pine, 5000ft below the trail. The trail itself stays above 8000ft for the next 300 miles! I’m 50 trail miles and 3.5 days north of KMS.

View from my hotel room, the peaks are 10000ft above me.

I buy an ice axe then miracles of miracles find my exact footwear for sale 65 miles north up the highway. By the powers of social media I connect with a trail angel coming south who collects them from the store and delivers them to me. The legend that is Jay Go!

Old and new. They’re the same model!

650 miles on old pair which is extraordinary.

I have grip again.
Spot the differences?
Such a relief to have new shoes. Phew!

How to lose weight. Go on a thruhike! I’ve lost 16 pounds already, and here’s why.

8 days of high calorie food.

Squished into my bear can it gives me 2500 calories a day. That’s fine for home life, more than enough, but out here I’m chugging through 4000+ calories of walking a day.

It’s a good thing the scenery takes my mind off my hunger-

Marmot
Trees and mountains.
Alan, a retired ranger from Tasmania, hiking through a grove of trees.
My walking poles are 4ft long. These blowdowns aren’t getting any smaller!
This National Park is huge!

Tomorrow I head out with Willem and Olga for a 9 day stretch of the highest mountains and highest passes on the PCT. With my first days’ food as a fresh sandwich from a local cafe strapped to my pack this the longest section so far between civilisation. See you in a while!
